What Confucius Can Teach Us About Learning Through Internships

‍

Introduction

Why do internships matter for university students and recent graduates? The benefits of internships go beyond gaining professional experience: they help students apply academic knowledge, develop practical skills, and explore career paths. Interestingly, these benefits connect with an idea expressed centuries ago by Confucius: learning becomes more meaningful when we put knowledge into practice.

1. Experiential Learning: Why Learning by Doing Matters

Classroom learning provides an essential foundation, but applying knowledge in real-world situations helps students understand how it works in practice. This is the principle behind experiential learning theory, particularly David Kolb's model of learning through experience and reflection.

Kolb's learning cycle involves four stages: experiencing a situation, reflecting on what happened, connecting the experience to existing knowledge, and applying what has been learned to new situations.

An internship can bring this process to life. For example, a marketing intern might help create a social media campaign, analyse its performance, discuss the results with a supervisor, and use the feedback to improve the next campaign.

Research suggests that practical placements can support students' professional skills and personal and academic development.

Of course, an internship does not automatically guarantee meaningful learning. Relevant responsibilities, constructive feedback, and opportunities to reflect are important to making the experience worthwhile.

2. What Does Confucius Have to Do with Experiential Learning?

The connection between experiential learning and Chinese philosophy may seem unexpected. Yet Confucius also emphasised the importance of practicing what we learn.

One well-known passage from the Analects states:

学而时习之，不亦说乎？(Xué ér shí xí zhī, bù yì yuè hū?）

This is commonly translated as: “To learn and regularly practice what you have learned, is that not a pleasure?”

The passage highlights the relationship between acquiring knowledge and putting it into practice. Studying communication, teamwork, or management is one thing; applying these concepts in a professional environment is another.

Confucius did not develop modern experiential learning theory. Rather, his emphasis on practicing what one learns provides a philosophical connection to the idea that knowledge becomes more meaningful through application.

3. The Main Benefits of Internships for Students

What can students and recent graduates gain from an internship?

Applying academic knowledge: Internships show students how concepts learned at university translate into professional tasks, from preparing marketing reports to assisting with hotel operations.
Developing professional skills: Managing deadlines, collaborating with colleagues, and responding to feedback can help interns develop communication, teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
Exploring career interests: Experiencing a role or industry first-hand can help students confirm their interests or discover a career path that better matches their strengths and ambitions.
Building cross-cultural awareness: For students completing an internship abroad, adapting to a different environment can offer opportunities to understand new communication styles, workplace expectations, and approaches to problem-solving.

In the hospitality sector, these differences can be particularly interesting. Discover how internship experiences in China and Europe compare.

The value of an internship ultimately depends partly on the quality of the experience. Meaningful tasks, appropriate supervision, and constructive feedback can help turn everyday responsibilities into genuine learning opportunities.
