You may have heard some concerning statistics about the working hours in China. In China, it is common for coworkers to spend much more time together than colleagues in the west. Many employees are accustomed to long days, short breaks, and difficulty establishing work life balance. Sina Careers, on the other hand, strives to cultivate interdisciplinary experiences that are focused not wholly on the workload, but on comprehensive representations of life in China.

The objective of our work at Sina Careers is to curate real-life, hands-on experiences within the thriving hospitality and international business industries across China. We welcome employees with the desire to gain fresh perspectives from collaboration with Chinese colleagues.

Since performance in the office depends on a combination of teamwork, common thought, and harmony among coworkers, an office may sometimes embark upon collective excursions as a teambuilding activity. Sina Careers proudly supports and upholds this aspect of Chinese office culture to allow its interns the full experience of employment within China.

Traditionally, the Chinese workweek consisted of 72 hours total: twelve hour days from 9am to 9pm, six days a week with just a single day off. This timetable colloquially became known as 996 - a demanding employment requirement that required employees to dedicate the majority of each day to work.

Hard work is a historical aspect of East Asian societies at large; countries like Japan, Korea, and Singapore are known globally for often strict and unforgiving employment customs. This can be attributed to centuries-long hierarchical practices that saw large numbers working as a collective for the good of a people, a practice that surpassed empires and sustained dynasties.

In the contemporary era, many are bidding farewell to the grueling hours of the past. Several sources report that the average Chinese workweek lasts an average of approximately 48 hours. This progress, though gradual, has given way to a workplace less occupied with quantity of hours than quality of output.

Sina Careers Barbecue 2025

Chinese cuisine has a special fondness for barbecue. Originally employed in the grilling of whole animals, the barbecue of today consists largely of skewered chunks or slices of meat, vegetables, and other delectables. There are near endless selections for the range of foods one can buy on the skewer, including glutinous rice sausage, chicken hearts, and the popular pork belly.

While barbecues sometimes mark holidays, as is the case with the yearly Mid-Autumn festival in China or the American independence day celebration, often they are planned as a leisurely activity to be enjoyed during nice weather, visits from friends, or just because.

There are few greater activities than a day spent in nature, surrounded by loved ones and good food. On 20 September, after a week of dismal weather, the office spent the day at 银沙滩 (Silver Sand Beach) with family, friends, and famous Tsingdao beer. A lovely time was had by all!
